As you probably know, World Prematurity Day is the most important day of the year for our community and each year, it is gaining in global momentum. In Canada alone, we had 57 landmarks lit up while CPBF hosted 21 in-person celebrations in hospitals across the country.
And in total, 107 countries around the world participated in World Prematurity Day activities and events.
For many of us, November 17 has become a familiar date; a day marked in purple, filled with stories, advocacy, remembrance, and hope.
Beginning in 2026, that date will officially change.
World Prematurity Day will now be globally recognized on November 15.
Change can be difficult! A lot of people are wondering why change the date after all these years? Well, it’s worth it! The World Health Organization has formally recognized World Prematurity Day as one of its official global observance dates.
This move places prematurity firmly on the global health agenda. Prematurity affects millions of families across the globe and, we know, the challenges do not end at discharge. Long-term outcomes, access to follow-up care, family mental health, and the need for evidence-based supports are global realities.
With WHO’s recognition, World Prematurity Day becomes more than awareness. It becomes a shared platform.
It gives clinicians, researchers, families, and advocates around the world a unified moment to speak with one voice.
At CPBF, we see this day as a call to action.
