In neonatal units from coast to coast, something beautiful is taking shape this May. For the first time ever, we’re hosting the National Kangaroo-a-thon, a friendly but powerful nationwide challenge that puts what matters most front and centre: parents and their babies.
At its heart, the Kangaroo-a-thon is a celebration of the time parents spend doing kangaroo care. That’s the science-backed practice of holding a baby skin-to-skin, heart to heart, a method shown to reduce stress, support brain development, stabilize breathing and temperature, and foster deep emotional bonding. Every hour spent in kangaroo holding isn’t just time logged; it’s time invested in healing and connection.
This national initiative grew out of a local effort in Toronto that showed just how transformative supported cuddling can be. Staff and families who took part saw parents grow in confidence and babies thrive, all because someone took the time to hold close.
Throughout May, Level 2 and Level 3 neonatal units will log hours of kangaroo care, and while there are awards planned for the participating units, the real impact goes far beyond prizes. It’s about giving parents a shared purpose, building confidence at a moment when it’s easy to feel overwhelmed, and reminding families that touch is powerful. It’s about showing — through science and community — that sometimes the simplest thing we can do matters most.
For many parents in the NICU, kangaroo care is the first time they truly feel like a parent, even amid tubes and monitors. For babies, that closeness lowers stress hormones, supports growth and helps regulate vital functions. And for the units that take part, it’s a chance to strengthen programs and deepen support for families.
Want to take part? Any Level 2 or 3 unit can register and we will make it as easy as possible to participate (we will send posters and log sheets)! Not only can this change the trajectory of the babies and their families in NICUs, but there are also amazing prizes! Check them out here: www.cpbf-fbpc.org/kcathon
