Healthcare teams across Canada recognize that babies do better when families are present and involved in their baby’s care.

But many NICUs haven’t unlocked the secret yet in involving families to their maximum capacity. That's where a new resource, From the Heart, can help.

Developed through a collaboration between the CPBF, the SickKids Infant and Early Mental Health Program, and Family Integrated Care (FiCare), From the Heart is a beautiful, engaging resource that was created to help families better understand their role as partners in care while offering practical advice, encouragement, and insight from parents who have experienced the NICU journey firsthand.

The resource explores topics such as navigating uncertainty, building relationships with healthcare providers, advocating for your baby, caring for your own well-being, and finding confidence during a time that can feel anything but certain.

By combining evidence-informed approaches with lived experience, From the Heart helps bridge the gap between wanting families to be involved and helping them feel empowered to do so.

The resource reflects a shared belief that family-integrated care is most successful when families feel informed, supported, valued, and welcomed as essential members of their baby's care team.

Whether you are a parent currently in the NICU, a healthcare professional supporting families, or an organization committed to family-integrated care, From the Heart offers practical guidance and encouragement for the journey ahead.

Because when families are supported, babies benefit.
