World Prematurity Day 2026: A New Date, a Stronger Global Voice

This November 15, the world will come together to recognize babies born too soon, celebrate their families and advocate for a brighter future. And this year marks an important milestone.
For the first time, World Prematurity Day will be observed on November 15 following its official recognition by the World Health Assembly in 2025. Previously held on November 17, the day now has a place on the World Health Organization's official calendar, bringing greater global attention to preterm birth and the needs of babies and families.
This recognition is a significant step forward for a community that has spent years raising awareness, sharing experiences and advocating for better care.
Small Babies, Big Potential
The 2026 global theme, "Small babies, big potential. Invest in follow-up care to protect their future!", reminds us that the journey of prematurity doesn't end when a baby leaves the NICU.
For many children born prematurely, continued developmental monitoring, early intervention and access to specialized services can make an important difference as they grow.
World Prematurity Day is an opportunity to celebrate how far neonatal care has come while calling attention to the work that still needs to be done to ensure every child has the opportunity to thrive.
Canada Is Lighting Up Purple!
CPBF is proud to play a leading role in promoting World Prematurity Day across Canada, joining organizations and individuals in more than 100 countries to raise awareness, organize events and advocate for improved outcomes for preterm babies and their families.
As part of the International Global Illumination Project, landmarks and monuments across Canada will shine purple on November 15 to honour babies born prematurely, their families and the dedicated healthcare professionals and caregivers who support them.
See a landmark glowing purple? We want to see it!
Take a photo and share it on social media using #WorldPrematurityDay and #PreemiePowerCanada. Together, we can fill our feeds with purple and show families across the country that they're part of a much larger community.
Join Our Special World Prematurity Day Preemie Chats
On November 13, CPBF will host a special edition of Preemie Chats: A Voice Beyond the NICU, bringing together parents, healthcare professionals and advocates from Canada and around the world.
Through personal experiences, expert perspectives and international conversations, we'll explore why continued care matters, how families can be better supported after NICU discharge, and what we can learn from one another.
The event will also feature a live look at neonatal follow-up care in Moncton, New Brunswick.
Whether you're a NICU parent, healthcare professional or someone passionate about improving care for children born prematurely, we invite you to be part of this important conversation.
