Premature Birth in Canada

An Environmental Scan

Preterm Birth in Canada: An Environmental Scan prepared for the Canadian Premature Babies Foundation-Fondation pour Bébés Prématurés Canadiens is the first Canadian scan on preterm birth with such diverse stakeholders, including parents, nurses, lactation consultants, neonatologists, policy makers, and researchers.

Premature birth is the leading cause of infant mortality nationwide and a growing healthcare concern in Canada. In 2014, the Canadian Premature Babies Foundation released Premature Birth in Canada, a report that identifies gaps within the healthcare journey of premature children and provides recommendations for how to improve the lives of these babies and their families. Five years later, we acknowledge the work that clinicians and families are doing across the country to improve outcomes for this vulnerable population, but we also acknowledge how much more needs to be done.

CPBF-FBPC wishes to acknowledge the many individuals who have contributed to this environmental scan work. We greatly appreciate the parents, health care providers, and others who shared their experiences and expertise. Without their contribution and feedback, this work would not have been possible.
